The last 15 months brought with it many levels of change in both home and working life. One important area of working life, staff training, had to move from majority classroom based to remote learning. While remote staff training has its challenges, there are many benefits to consider. Going forward, a blended approach to learning may strike the optimum balance for effective staff upskilling and training. Previously, e-learning and remote training were highly underutilized, with in-person education being seen as the more favourable and effective method by which to train staff or conduct lessons. A recent study explored a staff group’s perception of online learning. 77% of participants were agreed on of the usefulness of e-learning, while 80% of individuals accepted e-learning as a method of upskilling. However, the study also revealed some of the major barriers to online learnings with 40% of participants citing unstable internet connection and 32% stating technical problems as key challenges associated with e-learning.

The Benefits of Online Staff Training

  • Facilitation anywhere, anytime: Multiple locations can receive training at the same time; staff across an organisation do not need to be brought to single space. This saves on travel time and associated costs.
  • Asynchronous Nature: Training can be recorded meaning staff can revisit material covered and have opportunities to rewatch multiple times. This allows staff to go through the material at their own pace without having to keep up with the group.
  • Control: People learn best in environments where they have a measure of control. E-learning motivates staff to take control of their progress and learn in more meaningful ways.
  • Digital Exposure: People are now accustomed to accessing information online; learning online has become a preferable medium by which staff gain knowledge and skills.
  • Remove Barriers: More staff have opportunities to access training.

The Challenges of Online Staff Training

  • Technology-based solution: Resulting in trouble shooting issues, connectivity issues/low bandwidth and employees not being able to get access.
  • Isolation: As everyone learns differently, learners that learn better in face-to-face scenarios may be at a disadvantage.
  • Accountability: Staff are accountable for their own time, requiring a certain level of self-discipline and trust from organisations.

Like most organisations, Aspirico had to pivot when the pandemic hit. Lisajane Humphreys, International client director has highlighted her experience of online training below, including the benefits and the challenges faced and how online training will progress for future customers and iplanit care management system roll outs.

“At Aspirico, we grappled with the challenges of Covid-19 most notably in our staff training phase of the iplanit care management system roll-out. Traditionally, face-to-face training would be conducted for our customers with an integration of some online training and follow up sessions. The pandemic resulted in a dramatic change to this with 100% of training and knowledge transfer being conducted online.

COVID-19 resulted in no opportunity to provide face to face training to our customers as we would have typically done for some elements of the iplanit system roll out plan. As a result, iplanit training has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of online only learning and knowledge transfer, undertaken on various platforms to suit each customer such as Teams, GTW and Zoom. The training lent itself to promote and enhance digital literacy. Benefits of iplanit online staff training:

  • Retention: Increased attention retention in staff training sessions– due to shorter sessions and bite-sized learning.
  • Reuse: The sessions are recorded and can therefore be reused as refresher training or during induction training for new staff. This resource proved extremely beneficial to customers.
  • Video: Video enabled platforms allowed for interaction improvements.
  • Flexibility: The sessions were provided at much more flexible times to help customers arrange the learners around shifts and rotas. Staff with family responsibilities during school closures could opt for online sessions that suited their life pressures.
  • Increased Attendance: More learners attended without the usual travel/distance issues and scheduling conflicts, joining from multiple locations. Along with this, it is easy to evidence and report on your staff attendance and development.
  • Feedback: Q & A was easy to capture using the chat features, more questions were asked and could be revisited by staff watching recordings.
  • Organisation Values: The executive sponsors were able to attend the first session for each group to launch and give the organisation’s key message to the learners.
  • Pacing: The sessions could be paced according to the different groups
  • Health and Safety: Safe learning environment to facilitate social distancing requirements for infection spread prevention.

Challenges of iplanit online training:

  • Learner Motivation: The motivation of the learner is a little harder to gauge with careful interaction being required without disrupting the flow of the session.
  • Limited Group Interaction: Face-to-face sessions often facilitate more group discussions and interactions.
  • Preparation: Customers need to do a little more preparation on their side to ensure the learners are ready and have the resources to attend the training such as:

– The prerequisite of adequate digital skills, computer equipment and internet access to undertake training online.

– The off-shift time to focus on the session.

– The ongoing roll-out plan and expectations set by the customer with key milestones clearly communicated.
